2. Airline Freight charges (payable to the airline)

Airlines charge freight as per the actual weight (crate + pet) or volumetric weight (crate), whichever is higher. Volumetric weight is calculated using Length (L), Breadth (B) and Height (H) of the pet crate. So for an XXL size (40") crate of 102 x 69 x 76, the volumetric weight is approx 89 kgs. Even though the actual weight is less, the airlines charge by the volumetric weight. The per kg rate ranges from INR 90 to 150. In addition there are other cargo handling, live animal, x-ray costs plus taxes.

Please call up the respective airline cargo offices to know the exact freight charges.

Approx freight charges:
Spicejet Mumbai to Bangalore 40" XXL crate = INR 14,000
Spicejet Bangalore to Delhi 32" L = INR 10,000
Air India Hyderabad to Pune 28" M crate = INR 8,000
Air India Delhi to Bangalore 48" Giant crate = INR 30,000
3. Other Costs

You may have to account for the following costs too while travelling with your pets by air:

  • Pet cabs to and from the airport = INR 12-20 per km
  • Fit-to-fly certificate from your local vet = INR 500 - 1000
  • Pet bowls = INR 200 - 300 each
  • Absorbent cooling mats = INR 500 - 1500 each
  • Food, water, treats.

(B) Train Travel

First of all, minimum 2 passenger tickets should be booked in the 1st AC of the train to be allotted a coupe/cabin. Please check availability and ticket costs at irctc.co.in.

For pets, Indian Railways charge freight according to their parcel booking rules. They consider only the ACTUAL weight of the pet and the travel distance to calculate the cost. No crate is required while traveling by train as the pet goes inside with you in the 1st AC Coupe / Cabin as allotted.

Approx parcel booking charges per pet:

  • Vizag to Secunderabad = INR 350
  • New Delhi to Nagpur = INR 550
  • New Delhi to Madgaon = INR 900
  • Secunderabad to New Delhi = INR 750
  • Mumbai to Bangalore = INR 550

Please go to the parcel office of the source station with a confirmed coupe/cabin ticket minimum 2 hrs before the start of journey.

Other Costs:

  • Pet cabs to and from the railway station = INR 12-20 per km
  • Fit-to-travel certificate from your local vet = INR 500 - 1000
  • Pet bowls = INR 200 - 300 each
  • Absorbent cooling mats = INR 500 - 1500 each
  • Food, water, treats.

(C) Road Travel

Try to hire a large sized cab (WagonR, Innova, Scorpio) for traveling with your pet by road. The cabs would charge you for the return trip also.

For example:

Hyderabad to Bangalore = 600 kms

WagonR km fare = 1,200 kms (600+600) x INR 12 per km = INR 14,400

Add the toll taxes, per day waiting charge, driver allowance (200-500 per day).

If the journey is more than one day, account for the night stay charges at a pet-friendly hotel.
